Charles Officer, director of “Invisible Essence: The Little Prince”, passes away

8, Jan, 2024

Director Charles Officer passed away after a long illness on December 1, 2023, in Toronto.

He was one of the few who could traverse the different worlds of the Canadian screen with remarkable ease.

“For Charles, it was about telling stories that mattered, whether it was a documentary, feature or series – it was about finding the characters and raising the voices that often go unheard,” recalls Jake Yanowski, who founded the production company CaneSugar Filmworks with Mr. Officer in 2015.

Our thoughts are with his two-year-old son Selah, with his partner, actress Alice Snaden.

“Many of Charles’s films are about young people, like his documentary Invisible Essence, about The Little Prince, a book he loved so much because it embodied the idea of looking at the world through the eyes of a child, and the wonder and admiration it evoked. For him, being a father was the most exciting thing ever,” said Janowski. “It’s devastating, but the greatest gift is that there’s a little piece of Charles on this planet who’s still alive. And who will be able to see all the things his father left behind.”
